With a warm smile, kind eyes and a soft voice, nurse Susan Murphy calmly makes her way through the Cardiac and Susan MurphyPulmonary Rehabilitation center at CaroMont Regional Medical Center, greeting patients as they prepare for their next class. The group that gathers, surrounded by treadmills and elliptical machines, is there because each of them has experienced and survived a cardiopulmonary event. They are there to try to build their strength and stamina as they work to recover from a life-altering health crisis. Charlotte Observer article: Congo native faced two civil wars; Thursday, he graduates from CPCC with two degrees

As Alvan Makoundi-Tchibinda walks across the stage with nearly 800 others at Central Piedmont Community College on Thursday, he leaves with two degrees. He also completes an obligation to his family in central Africa.
And now he is free to imagine a life of his own design.
Born in the nation of Congo, Makoundi-Tchibinda, 22, lived through two civil wars as a child before coming to the United States for college at 18.

Mayor Celebrates International Contributions and Philanthropy with Awards Ceremony

The Charlotte International Cabinet has announced the individual winners for the 19th Annual Mayor's International Community Awards (MICA) and Dr. Maha Gingrich, assistant vice president and international community liaison, will be presented with The Global Leader Award for embodying the spirit of Charlotte's global significance, displaying strong leadership in Charlotte's international community and cultivating awareness of the growing diversity of Charlotte. Over the past year, she has evolved from a leader in her respective cultural community to become a leader of the Charlotte community at large.
